Nadal bids farewell to the crowd after his defeat to Botic Van de Zandschulp in the opening match of the Davis Cup quarterfinal.
Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, played his final match on Tuesday night in Malaga, marking the end of his illustrious career. In his farewell to the sport, Nadal expressed a desire to be remembered as “a kid who followed their dreams.”
After 23 years on the professional tennis circuit, Nadal’s career concluded with Spain’s defeat to the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarterfinals. He retires with the second-most Grand Slam titles in men’s history, behind his longtime rival Novak Djokovic who is currently at 24. When asked about his legacy during an on-court presentation, the 38-year-old reflected that he hoped to be remembered as “a good person” and “a kid who achieved more than I ever dreamed.”
“I have been very lucky in the life I have had the opportunity to live, I have lived unforgettable experiences because of tennis…. I was just a kid that followed their dreams, worked as hard as possible to be where I am today.”
Nadal lost 6-4, 6-4 to Botic Van de Zandschulp in the opening match of the Davis Cup quarter-final, bringing an end to his remarkable 29-match winning streak in Davis Cup singles over 20 years.
Reflecting on his loss, Nadal said, “In some ways, it’s good, maybe, if that was my last match… I lost my first match in the Davis Cup and now my last one. We close the circle.”
Before Nadal spoke to the crowd, a tribute video was played, featuring messages from many of his rivals and others from the world of tennis.
“I leave with the peace of mind that I have left a legacy, which I really feel is not just a sporting one but a personal one… I understand that the love I have received, if it was just for what happened on the court, would not be the same.”
Nadal competed during the ‘Big Three’ era, alongside fellow legends Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, battling for the sport’s biggest titles. His greatest rivals were among those honoring his remarkable career.
Nadal’s rivals sent heartfelt video messages in tribute to his career. Federer said, “Congratulations on the most incredible career.” Djokovic shared: “Your tenacity, fighting spirit, energy, and power will be studied and transferred to many upcoming generations. I have been very honored and thrilled to be called your rival.”
Britain’s Andy Murray added: “The passion and intensity you played with was something I think all tennis players aspire to, and what all tennis fans will remember you for. It has been incredible watching you.”
American great Serena Williams, in her own video tribute, said: “You inspired me to have so many wins, to keep going, to fight, get better, and improve.”
